Migraines suck any time of the month, but when they come around during menstruation they really just add fuel to the fire.
Menstrual migraines can be more intense and last longer than migraines that occur at any other time in the month. This is likely due to the fact that estrogen levels drop to their lowest levels, causing a slew of PMS symptoms. Birth control and hormone replacement therapy can actually change the frequency and severity of this type of migraine, so it is important to let your provider know that you have migraines when prescribed.

There are several treatment options for menstrual migraines such as
-NSAIDS
-Prescription drugs such as triptans, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, bioidentical progesterone, etc.
-Caffeine
-Botox
-Low sodium diet and/or gluten-free diet
-Supplements such as magnesium, vitamin B2, melatonin, iron, etc.
-CBD
If you suffer from severe migraines and/or migraines with an aura, please consult with a healthcare professional. Often times birth control can exacerbate migraines and it is best to let your provider know.
Happy Menstruating!
