...
Since I stopped taking birth control and started tracking my cycle, I have been able to pinpoint exactly when my acne starts to appear. My acne shows up right after I ovulate and continues until I am done menstruating (during the luteal and menstrual phases). Knowing when to expect my acne has helped me know when to start adjusting my diet and daily habits to match my needs.
During the luteal phase, progesterone levels rise to meet high estrogen and testosterone levels at their peak. As menstruation approaches, these hormones fall rapidly. These extreme transitions throughout the luteal phase can cause an increase in acne along with other PMS symptoms. This hormonal change can lead to an overproduction of sebum, which can clog your pores and cause breakouts. The decrease in hormones can also lead to an increase in inflammation throughout the body, including the face.
One of the most popular and in my opinion, the most annoying location for hormonal acne is the chin and neck. I just entered the luteal phase and my chin, jawline, and neck are all breaking out. Be sure to avoid picking at your hormonal acne. Mine usually disappears once my period ends. If you really can't resist, try putting a hydrocolloid patch on your zits.
Acne can be so hard to deal with. Luckily, I have some great habits you can add to your life in order to reduce hormonal acne.
